Logging Cable

8.0 mm Armored Logging Cable

The 8.0 mm Armored Logging Cable is a load-bearing wireline cable designed for downhole logging operations.
The cable uses a stranded copper conductor, modified polypropylene (PP) insulation, two layers of steel wire armor and a modified polypropylene outer jacket. The combination of electrical insulation and mechanical reinforcement allows the cable to perform two jobs at the same time: transmitting electrical signals and supporting the downhole tool string.
With an 8.0 mm nominal diameter, the cable provides a compact construction while maintaining a specified 11 kN tensile strength. Its operating temperature range is -30°C to +150°C, with a specified pressure resistance of 80 MPa.
The dual steel-wire armor is particularly important in wireline applications. It protects the internal conductor from mechanical damage and provides the load-bearing structure needed during cable deployment and retrieval.

Technical Description

1. Copper Conductor

19 × 0.27 mm The central conductor is made from stranded copper wires. The stranded construction provides the electrical path while allowing the cable to maintain the flexibility required for repeated handling and bending.

2. Modified PP Insulation

3.0 ± 0.10 mm The conductor is surrounded by modified polypropylene insulation. The insulation separates the conductor from the steel armor and helps maintain electrical performance under downhole operating conditions.

3. Inner Steel Wire Armor

12 × 0.49 mm The first steel-wire armor layer provides mechanical reinforcement around the insulated conductor. It helps transfer tensile loads through the cable and protects the inner components from external mechanical forces.

4. Outer Steel Wire Armor

17 × 0.49 mm The second armor layer is installed over the inner armor. Together, the two armor layers form the main load-bearing structure of the cable while providing additional protection during deployment, retrieval and cable handling.

5. Modified PP Outer Jacket

8.0 ± 0.20 mm The modified polypropylene outer jacket forms the external protective layer. It helps protect the steel armor and internal components from the surrounding environment and gives the finished cable its specified outside diameter. Modified PP Insulation The use of modified polypropylene provides electrical insulation around the copper conductor. PP-insulated logging cables are widely used in wireline applications, with cable designs available for different temperature and environmental requirements. For this specific cable, the supplied specification gives an operating temperature range of: -30°C to +150°C 11 kN Tensile Strength The specified tensile strength is:11 kN This allows the cable to serve as a load-bearing connection for downhole logging equipment within the applicable operating limits. 80 MPa Pressure Resistance The supplied product specification gives:Pressure resistance80 MPa This is an important characteristic when the cable is used in high-pressure downhole environments. Electrical Performance The electrical characteristics of the cable are designed around the requirements of downhole measurement and logging equipment. Voltage Rating:1200 VDC The cable has a specified voltage withstand/rating of 1200 VDC. Insulation Resistance≥1000 MΩ·km at 20°C A high insulation resistance helps maintain electrical isolation between the conductor and the surrounding armor. DC Resistance:18 Ω/km at 20°C The conductor resistance affects voltage drop and power transmission over the length of the cable, so it should be considered when matching the cable to the logging tool and surface equipment. Capacitance:190 pF/m Cable capacitance can influence signal transmission, particularly in longer wireline systems. The specified capacitance provides a useful reference when selecting the cable for a particular logging system. Mechanical Performance The cable's mechanical design is centered around its dual steel-wire armor. During normal wireline work, the cable is subjected to more than simple vertical tension. It can also experience bending, repeated winding and unwinding, contact with sheaves and cable-head equipment, and mechanical loads during tool deployment. For this reason, the inner and outer armor layers are an important part of the overall cable design.
